POTHOLE HIT SQUAD SURGES PAST 3,000
New figures, released by Bedford Borough Council, show more than 3,000 potholes have now been filled by the ‘Pothole Hit Squad’ since their launch earlier this year.
That is the equivalent of covering the Bedford Blues rugby pitch one and a half times!
The Pothole Hit Squad was launched in January to provide a quick response service to fill and carry out permanent repairs to potholes throughout the borough. Originally launched with two squads, there are now four working in the borough. In fact, they have proved such a success that their funding has been extended until Spring 2012.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “The Pothole Hit Squad is proving to be a quick and effective way of dealing with potholes across the borough and I am delighted the squads have now filled more than 3,000 potholes.
“Local residents can also be assured that with winter just around the corner, the Pothole Hit Squad will continue at least until spring next year, meaning we will continue to repair our roads across the borough.”
Earlier this year, the Council received a government grant of £469,742 to assist with pothole repairs. The grant was the Councils share of £100M of extra resource made available nationally by the Department for Transport.
This funding was in addition to the Councils own allocated funds of over £5million during 2011/12 for all highway repairs – meaning Bedford Borough has made a significant investment of over £13million in its highways network over the last two years.
In addition to the Pothole Hit Squad, the Council is carrying out major resurfacing works on over 60 roads throughout the Borough during 2011/12.
Local residents who wish to report a pothole are still asked to contact the Highways Helpdesk on 01234 718003. All potholes will be assessed on a priority basis.
